Caring for Your Wood Furniture: Complete Guide

By FTM Menuiserie|

A well-maintained solid wood piece of furniture can last for several generations. Regular maintenance is the key to preserving the natural beauty of wood and avoiding damage related to time, humidity and daily use. As artisan woodworkers, we share with you our best practices for taking care of your furniture.

Daily cleaning is simple: a slightly damp soft cloth is enough to remove dust. Avoid harsh chemicals that attack the wood finish. For deep cleaning, use a mixture of warm water and Marseille soap, then wipe immediately with a dry cloth. Never forget to completely dry the wood after any contact with water.

Wood protection involves regular application of beeswax or linseed oil, depending on the type of finish. For varnished furniture, semi-annual polishing is sufficient. For oiled furniture, a new coat of oil is recommended every 6 to 12 months. Protect your furniture from direct sunlight which discolors the wood and from heat sources which dry it out.

For superficial scratches, rub a walnut (the fruit) on the damaged area: the natural oil will fill the scratch. For more significant damage, light sanding followed by a new coat of finish will bring your furniture back to life. When in doubt, do not hesitate to consult a professional for a restoration in the rules of the art.
